Sony Xperia 10 II (Xperia 10 Mark 2) is the new mid-range smartphone from Sony at a surprisingly low price for a Sony phone. It is priced at 319 pounds in the UK and 400$ in the US.Its expected price in India is Rs.27999 but availability in India is limited to some stores on pre-order.
Its somehow refreshing to see a Sony mid range phone as it opens up many new avenues for users.Brand loyalty is a term you can use for most Sony customers and Sony has seldom disappointed them in terms of performance.
Anyways the Xperia 10 II brings a lot of similarities with Sony’s upcoming flagship the Sony Xperia 1 II and has differences as well.Design, display and camera quality are pretty similar while there is a huge difference in processor.Well eithout much adieu let’s dive into the details.
DESIGN AND BODY
To put it in a phrase Sony Xperia 10 II ‘s design can be called “Sleek and Slim”.It is a tall phone but very slim in terms of breadth as well as thickness and light weighted for easy one handed use.The design is symmetrical with minimum bezels balanced on all sides.
The phone has a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protected front and glass in a plastic frame. The back has a matte finish which ensures less slipperyness. The build quality is excellent with elegant lines along the edges. The Sony Xperia 10 II is also IP65/68 certified Dust and Water resistant a feature commonly absent in mid-range smartphones.
The dimensions of the phone are 157mm x 69mm x 8.2mm.It weighs 151g only.
Sony Xperia 10 II has an amazing 6″OLED display with FHD+(1080 x 2520) resolution and ~77.6% screen to body ratio. It has a cinematic aspect ratio of 21:9 with ~457ppi.
The cinematic aspect ratio in the big display enables beautiful viewing and the OLED panel provides perfect color contrast with true colours. The One Handed mode with the side sense technology is also very useful for you if you have any problem in navigating the entire display.A Multi Window feature is also present for easy access to split screen mode and you can easily multi task with two different apps running together.
OS,PROCESSOR AND STORAGE
Xperia 10 II runs on Android 10.
Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset(11nm) with octa core processor(4×2.0GHz Kyro Gold,4×1.8GHz Kyro Silver). The GPU is Adreno610.As you can see Sony has compromised with the processor and I feel it could have provided any of the Snapdragon700 series chipsets. So if you are a guy for powerpacked performance this may not be the ideal phone for you.
It comes in a 4GB RAM + 128GB internal storage variant. There is a shared card slot with the dual nano sim slot for Micro SDXC card and you can expand memory upto 1TB.Storage should not be of any issue but the problem I have is with the RAM.Nowadays Android takes up almost 2GB of your RAM and hence 6GB is a minimum according to many.
At the back is a triple camera setup with a 12MP wide,f/2.0 sensor of focal length 26mm,a 8MP telephoto,f/2.4 lens with 52mm focal length and a 8MP ultra wide,f/2.2 sensor with 16mm focal length and 120degrees field of view.As you can see there is a vast range of focal lengths for good photography. The camera also comes with 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom.
A very important point worth mentioning is the choice of camera lenses. It is a common practice in the mid-range section to have a wide sensor,an ultra wide sensor and the rest one or two lenses to be macro and depth.Xperia 10 II has made a perfect decision to house the telephoto lens for good portraits I feel.Frankly the presence of macro lens in many smartphone cameras surprises me as I find minimum or no use of it in day to day life.
Night Mode features for all the lenses and is very important as low light imaging is not of very high standard without it.The camera powered by AI can recognise different shooting scenarios and adjust camera settings accordingly.Food Detection is another feature worth mentioning. The camera recognises food when shot at and enhances the image.Portraits or Group photos whichever you capture you will find natural skin tones as this Xperia camera automatically does it.The common LED flash,HDR and Panorama modes are present.
Videos of 4K can be shot at 30fps and 1080p @30fps and 120fps for slow motion videos.A Steady Shot feature is present which allows steady videos even if the object is moving.
Sony Xperia 10 II features a punch hole front camera of 8MP wide,f/2.0 sensor.Display flash is enabled and videos can be shot of 1080p at 30fps.The selfie shooter has HDR support.
The fingerprint sensor is side mounted.
Port for 3.5mm jack is present and the phone has a single speaker. They come with High Res Audio and Hi Res Audio Wireless certification and LDAC.The 3.5mm jack also has DSEE HX(Digital Sound Enhancement Engine). All these ensures excellent sound quality through your headphones.
Bluetooth,WiFi and USB 2.0 Type C cable is supported.
BATTERY AND COLOURS
Xperia 10 II is powered by a 3600mAH battery which supports 18W fast charging.Battery Care feature ensures that the battery is not overcharged. There is also this Xperia adaptive Charging Monitor which sees that the battery isn’t overworked.Besides these for battery saving we all know of the Stamina Mode of Sony phones. In spite of all these I wish that the battery was a 4000mAH one.
Four color variants are available-the Black,Mint,Blue and White.
If you can bear with the Snapdragon665 SoC which is not bad I should say, just below par at this moment, the rest features are in one word awesome for its budget.A very slim and light weighed design,an excellent 6″OLED display topped with the cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio and the triple Sony camera module are features you can’t just look past.Premium features like the Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and IP65/68 rated protection are also an added advantage.
All these with the Sony branding and especially the price makes the Sony Xperia 10 II a top contender for your next smartphone. What do you think? Please let me know in comments.
