The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr is proof that the tech world is shifting gears at a rapid pace and is always accelerating.Innovations, improvements and periodic upgradation are the call of the day. With so many companies making phones it seems that a point may come where you will have no more expectations but that point never arrives.Something new, something innovative is always happening.
The two giants, one was a giant at some point of time,of phone industry are at the forefront of this.I am talking of Samsung and Motorola. At this point Samsung is way ahead of Motorola but they are always innovating. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and the Motorola Razr is an example.
Moto Razr foldable phone was the first to arrive in the iconic design of the first Moto Razr and I am sure nobody forgot that phone. It was a revolutionary at that time. This attempt of foldable phone is the company’s first.
Samsung had brought the folding concept before through the Galaxy Fold but it was ,to put it bluntly a rank failure. Now they have come up with the Galazy Z Flip and please remember it is not Fold 2.Yes Samsung learned from the mistakes they made in Fold 1 and have addressed them but Z Flip is completely different.
Now if we compare specs of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr, Samsung is the outright winner. But in respect to foldable phones Motorola Razr has some plus points.Let’s have a look at their various aspects.
DESIGN AND BODY
Both the phones are vertically foldable. The thing about design to look in these phones is the hinge that is the junction where the two parts are joined.
In terms of hinge engineering Samsung has the more developed one.The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is nearly gapless at the hinge and there are even brushes there to clear away debri that might enter. The phone can remain open halfway which the Motorola Razr can’t.This has advantages like you can use it like a tripod or a small laptop with two operations on two sides of display.
But there is a slight disadvantage there as opening the phone with one hand is a little tough.
Once fully open you will find that there are minimum bezels and the bezels are raised than the display so that when folded the display on both parts doesn’t touch each other. The bottom has a bigger bezzzled chin and knobs on the two edges where the upper part rests when folded.
The dimensions are 87.4mm x 73.6mm x 17.3mm when folded and 167.3mm x 73.6mm x 7.2mm when unfolded.The Galaxy Z Flip weighs 183g.
The Motorola Razr has a quite prominent gap at the hinge. When you flip open the phone halfways it always tries to go full screen or the opposite way round when you try to close it.You cannot keep it half open and a zap sound comes everytime you close the phone.
It also has minimum bezels but the chin at the bottom is big and raised. The fold actually ends before this chin going along with the iconic Moto Razr style. The bezels are not raised though. It has knobs on the top edges which rests above the chin when folded.
The dimensions are 94.2mm x 72mm x 14mm when folded and 172mm x 72mm x 6.9mm when unfolded.It weighs 205g.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip claims of having the first flexible glass display with a thin plastic layer on top for protection. It has a 6.7″ Oled display with 2636 x 1080p resolution,21:9 aspect ratio and ~425ppi.
Motorola Razr has a 6.2″ full plastic Oled display with 2142 x 876p resolution,21:9 aspect ratio and ~373 ppi.
It is clear that Samsung wins this by a big margin. But this is not all. When the phone is folded then also you have a display on both devices and there the Motorola Razr wins. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has a very small pill shaped window of 1.1″ display and 300 x 112p resolution. You can just view time or that a notification or message has arrived.
Motorola Razr on the other hand has a bigger peek display which they call the Quick View which has a 2.7″ glass display with 800 x 600p resolution.Beside swiping through notifications you can also view messages on this display.
No foldable phone at this moment is without crease in the middle due to the hinge. The Z Flip has a single dent crease which is visible from all angles and one can always feel it.The Razr pushes the screen down at the gap of the hinge thus creating a larger soft double dented crease. It decreases visual interruption but it will be feeled more on touch.
Touch sensation on the plastic display of the Razr is noticeably more rigid than the Z Flip’s display. The Z Flip though claims of the flexible glass display has a plastic layer on top and touch senstion is rigid but smoother than its counterpart. In terms of specs Samsung kills it with the main display but if you think i terms of foldable phones Razr has an advantage with its secondary display as everytime you will not have to open the phone to see the notifications.
OS,PROCESSOR,RAM & STORAGE
Galaxy Z Flip runs Samsung’s One UI 2 based on Android10 while the Motorola Razr runs on Android9 Pie(upgradable to Android10).
In terms of processor Samsung features the better and faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 855SoC with Adreno 640 GPU while the Motorola runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC powered by Adreno 616.
Samsung is also a clear winner with its 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage capacity as the Motorola phone has 6GB RAM and 128GB on board storage.
The Motorola Razr has a single 16MP f/1.7 sensor and a 5MP f/2.0 front/selfie camera. When the phone is folded the rear camera acts like the selfie camera so practically speaking you get a 16MP selfie camera as well
.4K videos @30fps and 1080p videos @30fps can be shot on the main camera. The selfie shooter can capture 1080p videos at 30fps.
The Galaxy Z Flip can boast of a far superior camera module. The main camera which again can act as a selfie camera when phone is folded is a dual module with 12MP f/1.8 wide sensor and another 12MP f2.2 ultra wide sensor. So ultra wide selfies can also be shot with this phone.
The dedicated selfie shooter is a 10MP f/2.4 sensor.4K videos @30fps can also be captured with the front camera.
HDR,Panorama and all the customary camera features with LED flash are present in both.HDR is supported in the front cameras a well.
On a whole the Samsung nails it in respect to camera settings.Maybe on pixel count the 16MP sensor of Motorola looks higher but the dual camera with the 12MP ultra wide sensor is clearly superior.
Motorola Razr is powered by total 2510mAH battery.I say total because there are 2 batteries on the two folds.Well Samsung again seals the deal with its larger 3300mAH battery. Both support 15W fast charging.
COLOURS AND PRICE
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes in many colour variants-Mirror Black,Mirror Purple,Mirror Gold and there is also a special edition. It is priced at $1380(Rs1,15,999/Amazon).
The Motorola Razr has 2 colour variants-the Noir Black and Blush Gold.It is priced at $1499(Rs.1,24,999/Flipkart).
The price looks way over the board but actually it is decreasing. The first foldable phones were even priced at 3000$.Samsung now has a phone which is costlier than the Flip namely the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
Foldable phones are not for all. Those who love it actually know what they have to pay.But it is a positive step.Maybe in the near future foldables will be the most craved phones and with technological improvements the prices are bound to decrease.
Now coming to these two devices Samsung clearly wins on every aspect except the Over view display. It is even priced lower. But when you will take out the folded phone from your pocket it doesn’t look like you have paid so much .On the other hand the Motorola Razr with its iconic design,a bigger look alike of the old Moto Razr, looks more premium.
Obviously the last point should not be of so much value to many because different people have different views and the above is completely mine.Anyways how did you like the two ? Please let me know in comments.
