SAMSUNG GALAXY S21 ULTRA 5G – Need Anything Else?

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is the first high end flagship device to release in 2021.We all expect this year to be drastically better than the previous one and the same applies to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra too.I hope all of you remember the issues with the S20 Ultra specially the camera focus.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra was a beast of a smartphone with all possible high end specs we could imagine in 2020 but somehow it couldn’t conquer the market.Automatically all Samsung users who can afford a Ultra is expecting a lot of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the first impressions hint they won’t be disappointed.

The S21 series has two more phones, the Galaxy S21 and the S21+.We will discuss about these later. This post will be exclusively about the The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is obviously 5G enabled and it’s India pricing starts from 106000 INR.The drop in launch price compared to that of S20 Ultra is noticeable though it is still out of reach for the mass.

Without much adieu let’s have a look at the details.

The first thing you notice on holding a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is the camera module. It looks as if it is wrapped over the back. The bump is present but overall it looks beautiful. The colours are also more attractive. The aluminium frame of the phone is sandwiched between Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on both front and back thus making it more safe from accidental fall.Infact it can be said as the most safe since till now there’s nothing better than the Gorilla Glass Victus.

Bezels are almost negligible in presence. The phone is 8.9mm thick and weighs approximately 227g.It sounds thick and heavy but for what the device offers the stats are appropriate and handling is pretty easy.Inevitably the Galaxy S21 Ultra is IP68 certified water and dust resistant.

The display of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is a 6.8″ Dynamic Amoled 2X with 1500 nits maximum peak brightness. The brightness of the Galaxy S20 Ultra was deemed to be near perfect i.e maximum possible and the S21 Ultra surpasses that number too.

The aspect ratio is 20:9 and the pixel density is~515ppi.The resolution is of 1440× 3200 pixels(QHD) and the display without question supports HDR10+ and is an Always On Display.Again the display supports 120Hz refresh rate and is better than the S20 Ultra in supporting the maximum resolution at the maximum refresh rate.(The S20 Ultra didn’t support both maximum resolution and refresh rate together.)

To be very frank this can easily be credited as the best display in a smartphone at present.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra runs on Android 11 which is topped over by Samsung’s own software skin the One UI version 3.1.DeX support, Bixby are all featured and that also in the latest upgraded version.

Now the most important specs of a smartphone which is also the most debated in a Samsung flagship and that is the chipset. As usual the global version comes with the company’s own Exynos 2100 chipset with octa core processor (1×2.9GHz,3×2.8GHz and 4×2.2GHz).US version runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset also with an octacore processor (1×2.84GHz,3×2.42GHz and 4×1.8GHz).Both run on 5nm technology. The figures of the Exynos is larger but as we all know performance wise the Snapdragon is miles ahead atleast till date.Samsung claims that the new Exynos is far better and yes it has closed the gap in the recent years but still we have to find out.

The chipset not only determines the speed of the phone but it also influences the image processing and most importantly the battery usage.Snapdragon chipsets have been way more battery efficient till now.We will see what the Exynos can do this year.

The GPU is Mali G78- MP14 for the global version and Adreno 660 for the Snapdragon one.

One more important feature is 5G.The previous Snapdragon flagship chipset i.e the Snapdragon 865 had a different 5G modem which was added to the chip but this time the 5G modem is integrated into the chipset which makes it more efficient and also cuts the cost.

The minimum RAM in the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is 12GB with two internal storage options of 128GB and 256GB.The maximum storage variant is 16GB RAM and 512GB onboard storage. No external memory card is supported this time but the 16/512GB version is more than enough.

Tje most talked about feature of the Galaxy S20 Ultra was the 108MP camera with 100X space zoom in the biggest camera bump ever. The camera bump in the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is also big but the module is very beautifully integrated into the phone and looks like a part of the body. The primary camera is still of 108MP f/1.8.The difference this time is in the presence of laser autofocus which addresses the issue of focussing.OIS and PDAF are also featured.

There are two telephoto lenses of 10MP.One is a periscope telephoto lens with f/4.9 supporting 10X optical zoom and the other of f/2.4 with 3X optical zoom. Both have OIS(optical image stabilization). These two lenses enables the phone to zoom into an image from 1X to 10X and that also optical. The 100X space zoom which is actually digital zoom is also featured but this time it is far better because of the two telephoto lenses.

The big camera could easily hold a fifth lens but the module holds a quad camera set-up.Well theoretically the fourth lens works as an extra camera as well.It is a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide sensor which has dual pixel PDAF and hence in close up shots it acts like a macro lens. This macro camera is million times better than the 2MP ones present in other phones.

8K [email protected] can be captured.4K videos can be captured at 60fps along with the regular 30fps.1080p videos @30/60/240 fps and 720p @960fps can be captured (super slow motion).HDR10+ support, stereo sound and gyro EIS makes video shooting a remarkable experience.

On the front is an eyebrow raising 40MP f/2.2 punch hole selfie shooter.Auto HDR,dual video call,PDAF are all supported.4K [email protected]/60fps and [email protected] can be captured.

Like this other flagship Samsung devices the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra also features an under display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner which is also larger than the predecessors.Face unlock is also supported along with the customary pattern or pin unlock.

Well the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra supports S-Pen.Surprised!! Rumours were that Samsung will no more make Note devices which had this patent stylus S-Pen.But those are false rumours.Yes the S21 Ultra supports S-Pen but it is not part of the phone.Even the phone does not have a place for the stylus. You have to buy it separately along with a cover which can hold the S-Pen.It is an additional accessory which if you want can make use of.This add on actually makes the Ultra more Ultra(hope you get my point).

A big 5000mAH battery is present in the phone which supports 25W fast charging. But following the footsteps of Apple iPhone 12 no charger brick is present in the box.Fast wireless charging and reverse wireless charging is supported.

Phantom Black, Phantom Silver, Phantom Titanium, Phantom Navy and Phantom Brown are the colour options.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is an ultimate flagship device which would be very hard to compete with. The features are excellent and Samsung has solved most of the issues it faced with previous year’s flagship. The cameras are excellent with a primary 108MP lens and a big 40MP selfie shooter. The battery is large enough. The display is second to none and this time it supports the high 120Hz refresh rate with QHD resolution together. The fingerprint sensor is also made larger for more accurate results.

The only criticism I can think of is the different chipsets for global and US .Maybe the Exynos will catch up with the Snapdragon one this time but still I feel everyone in the world should have the same experience.

Headphones had already been extinct and this year it’s the turn of the charging brick.Neverthless the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is a very recommendable phone if you can afford it.What do you think? Please let me know in comments.
