Sometimes it is hard to keep count of the number of Samsung phones released in a year. They release phones of a particular series like the A’s,M’s or the J’s.For example in January 2020 they launched Galaxy A71,then in February the Galaxy A51 and on March 24 the latest Samsung Galaxy A31.
Yes there are basic similarities between these phones and that’s why they come under the same series name.Again there are many dissimilarities also. The price is a very good example of how different they are.The A71 costs Rs.32,998 for the 8GB/128GB variant, the A51 is priced at Rs.25250 for the 6GB/128Gb variant and the A31 which has not yet been released in India at 245$(US).The Samsung Galaxy A31 is expected to release in India in June with a price of Rs.14,990 for the 4GB/64GB variant, which is also expected to be the only variant released in India.
If the expected price is right then the Samsung Galaxy A31 has all the ingredients to become a mid range favourite.Let’s have a look at the details of this phone first.
DESIGN AND BODY
The design is similar to the A51 and A71.The back has a quad camera module and the front has a waterdrop notch selfie camera. The power button and the volume rockers are on the right side and the sim tray with a dedicated slot for Micro SD card on the left side. The 3.5 mm jack port,USB TypeC port and speaker is on the bottom.
The dimensions are 159.3mmx73.1mmx8.6mm.It weighs 185g.
This is where Samsung phones are the best. The Galaxy A31 is no exception. It comes with a 6.4″Amoled U display with 1080×2400 resolution,20:9 aspect ratio and ~411ppi.Amoled displays are automatically bright and come with vibrant colours. This phone also has ambient light sensor to enhance that.
OS,PROCESSOR AND STORAGE
The phone runs One UI2.0 based on Android 10.
Under the hood is a Mediatek Helio P65 SoC with octa core processor(2x2GHz,6×1.7GHz) and Arm Mali G52 2EEMC2 GPU.Until now this is the only point I have doubts about. The Helio P65 is an adequate processor but not of the standards of Exynos 9611 of the A51 or the even better Snapdragon 730 of the A71.But to compromise on price I think you have to compromise on some specs.
The Samsung Galaxy A31 comes in 2 variants-4GB RAM and 64GB on board storage(which is set to come to India) and 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. It has a dedicated Micro SD card slot by which you can get upto 512GB external storage.
The quad camera features a primary 48MP f/2.0 wide sensor,a 8MP f/2.2 ultra wide sensor,a 5MP f/2.4 macro sensor and a 5MP f/2.4 depth sensor.
LED flash, HDR, panorama are supported. It also comes with autofocus and face detection. The portrait mode also provides good images with proper edge detection thanks to the depth sensor. Some of the camera settings are missing from the other two phones of the series.
Maximum 1080p videos @30fps can be captured. It is good but obviously not of very high quality.Again it misses the EIS(electronic image stabilisation) present in A51 and A71.
The ever so important selfie camera is a 20MP f/2.2 wide sensor.Portrait selfies with the help of focus has an adequate Bokeh effect.Videos of 1080p can be shot at 30fps on the front camera as well.
The phone has an under display optical fingerprint sensor which obviously gives a premium feeling. It als supports face unlock which is really fast and really good for a phone of this budget.
It supports 3.5mm jack and audio quality of the speakers are also quite good.
USB Type C is supported.NFC is not for all regions.
BATTERY AND COLOURS
Samsung has rightly decided that customers of this budget section want a big battery and they have provided a massive 5000mAH battery which supports proprietory 15W fast charging.
There are many colour variants-Prism Crush Black,Prism Crush Red,Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White.
COMPARISON WITH GALAXY A51 AND GALAXY A71
The Samsung Galaxy A31 is the thickest of the three phones at 8.6mm.The A51 is 7.9mm thick and the A71 7.2mm.
A31 is taller than the A51 though it has a 6.4″Amoled display while A51 has 6.5″Amoled display. This is because of the little chin at the bottom of the A31.
The Galaxy A71 is the tallest and has the biggest display of 6.7″.
The A71 and A51 are also similar in their punch hole front cameras while the A31 has a water drop notch as is evident from the picture above.
The Galaxy A51 runs on the Exynos9611 SoC(10nm) with 2.3GHz octa core processor and Mali G72 MP3 GPU.The A71 has Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SoC(8nm) under the hood with 2.2GHz octa core processor and Adreno618 GPU.Both of these are better than the Mediatek Helio P65 SoC of the Galaxy A31.
The A51 is similar to A31 in terms of primary camera sensor of 48MP but differs in the ultra wide sensor of 12MP f/2.0 which is 8MP in the A31.Rest cameras are similar. The A71 is again similar to A51 ‘s camera except the primary sensor which is 64MP f/1.8.Obviously the A71 has the best camera of the three.A51 and A71 also has EIS(electronic image stabilisation) which the A31 doesn’t have.
Both of them also support maximum 4K [email protected] while the A31 supports maximum 1080P videos.
A51 and A71 both have 32MP f/2.2 front camera while the A31 has only 20MP.
The galaxy A31 shines on terms of battery. It has the largest of 5000mAH.The A71 has 4500mAH but supports 25W fast charging. The A51 has a 4000mAH battery.
All the phones run on Android 10 and have In display fingerprint sensor, face unlock,3.5mm jack and dedicated slot for MicroSD card. The A71 features NFC everywhere.

The Galaxy A31 is the newest in the family and also the cheapest. So if budget is not a constraint then you should always go for the high end phones to get maximum top specs. But the question arises that at the price point are you getting your money’s worth?
Well the A31 has a beautiful display,a big battery and camera specs are also quite good. The in display fingerprint sensor and the face unlock gives a premium feeling as well. The only objection you may have is the processor and rightly so.Some competitor phones of this budget have a better processor. But if you go for brand value then naturally Samsung will be your choice.
