Xiaomi Redmi 9 Prime was launched in India yesterday and will be on sale from 6th August via Amazon.Non Indians don’t worry this is just a renamed Redmi 9 available globally.Honestly I find no reason as to why it was renamed. It seems the Chinese company is hell bound on trying to show a new brand for India only in answer to the ongoing tension between the two countries.
Well Xiaomi boasts of honest pricing.Redmi 9 Prime is a good example that actually there is no such thing as honest pricing. The 4/64GB variant is priced at Rs.9,999 a very good price for what the phone offers. But the 4/128GB variant costs Rs.11,999.So it means that you have to pay 2000 more for 64GB extra storage!!!A micro SD card is available at lesser price.
Take an example how pricing is so different.Redmi Note 9 is priced at Rs.11999 for the 4/64GB model and Rs.13499 for 4/128GB version.Hence in this case the cost of 64 GB extra storage is Rs.1500.Again the 6/128 GB version is Rs.14999 which is still acceptable since a bigger RAM is being provided.
Moving away from controversies let’s have a look at the details.
DESIGN AND BODY
Redmi 9 Prime looks good, much better than it’s price. The design is called Aura design by the company. The unique feature is the circular module on the back which houses the quad camera set up and the fingerprint sensor. The frame is plastic and display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.The phone is splash resistant and has P2i nano coating to protect against the splashes.
As you can see on the front is a tear drop notch selfie camera.Redmi 9 Prime has a 3.5mm jack,a single bottom firing speaker grill,USB Type C port and an IR blaster port on top enabling you to use it as a remote control. The power button and volume rockers are on the right side while the sim tray for dual nano SIM and a micro SD card slot is on the left.
The dimensions are 162.3mm×77.2mm×8.9mm.It weighs 198g.
Redmi 9 Prime sports a 6.53″ IPS LCD display with FHD+ resolution (1080×2400) and 19.5:9 aspect ratio.Obviously you cannot expect an Amoled display on a phone of this price but this LCD display is pretty enough for your daily experience.
OS, PROCESSOR AND STORAGE
MIUI 11 is slapped over Android 10.Usual MI UI features are present and still some of the banned apps are there.
Under the hood is the Mediatek Helio G80 SoC which runs on 12nm technology and has an octa core processor (2×2.0GHz,6×1.8GHz).The GPU is Mali-G52 MC2.This chipset is a game centric one and specially made for these low range smartphones and has the Hyper Engine and AI support. But don’t expect this to be of the level of the more enhanced chipsets.
4GB RAM variant is only available in India though a 3GB version is available globally.64GB and 128GB are onboard storage options available. There is also a dedicated micro SD card slot for expandable storage.
A quad camera set-up is present on the back which houses a 13MP f/2.2 primary wide sensor,a 8MP f/2.2 ultra wide sensor with 118°field of view,a 5MP f/2.4macro lens and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. The cameras are powered by AI and supports HDR.Good portraits can be captured thanks to the dedicated depth sensor. The macro lens can also be used for video [email protected] along with the main lens.
On the front is a tear drop notch 8MP f/2.0 selfie shooter which also has AI and can shoot videos of [email protected]
BATTERY AND COLOURS
There is no compromise in respect to the battery which is a massive 5020mAH one with 18W fast charging prowess.
Space Blue,Mint Green,Matte Black and Sunrise Flare are the colours available.
COMPARISON WITH REDMI NOTE 9
I am comparing the Redmi 9 Prime to the Redmi Note 9 for the simple reason that it is almost same priced.Actually the base variant of the Note 9 is similar in price to the top variant of the former i.e Rs.11999.What differences does it bring?
The camera section is the only big difference as the Note 9 has a primary 48MP camera and the macro lens is 2MP.The front camera is 13MP.Yes the back camera module is different in looks but rest specs like thickness weight are almost identical.Battery is same in both.
Now those of you who know about the phone may say that the Redmi Note 9 has Mediatek Helio G85 chipset while the Redmi 9 Prime has Helio G80.Yes but if you look into details both have the same CPU and GPU.The only difference is that the frequency of the Mali G52 GPU in the Helio G85 is 1000MHz while in the Helio G80 it is 950MHz.Thus you get only a difference of 50MHz in frequency. This I can vouch that you will not be able to differentiate when you use the phones.
So obviously I recommend to buy the Note 9 if you are willing to pay the same price though you will get less onboard storage which can be made up by using a micro SD card.
