Poco F2 Pro has a reputation to behold. In 2018 Poco F1 had brought a revolution in the smartphone market. It had the reputation of being a very fast phone all because of the high end chipset it had.The cameras and other features were also high end and the very affordable price of ~Rs.21000 made it a crowd favourite.
A lot has happened after that.Poco is no more a sub brand of Xiaomi in India.Poco X2 came to the market but did not achieve the same response as the Poco F1.People were waiting for another revolutionary Poco phone and on the 12th of May 2020, Poco F2 Pro was launched globally.
Will it be the ultimate flagship killer as the company claims? That’s for you to decide. One thing is confirmed and that is the price will not be of the same range as the first Poco phone. There is a very solid reason for that.No phone at least of now can be of such a low price with the Snapdragon 865 under the hood.Actually you can say that it is one of the very few phones which packs Snapdragon 865 at the price tag with which Poco F2 Pro comes.
The 6GB variant is priced at€ 499 roughly Rs.41000 and the 8GB variant at €599 roughly Rs.50000.Well when it comes to India the price will be lower and I think the base variant will be roughly Rs.36000 and the top Rs.42000 roughly. But one thing I was very disappointed after watching the launch event. The Poco F1 had the largest sales in India but no mention of Indian variant or price was mentioned at the launch event.
Let’s have a look at the specs of this very awaited flagship killer.
DESIGN AND BODY
The Poco F2 Pro packs a glass front and back with a metal frame. The glass is Corning Gorilla Glass5.It has got minimum bezels at the front because of the pop up selfie camera. The back sports a unique circular quad camera module with the LED flash just below.
The dimensions are 163.3mm x 75.4mm x 8.9mm(length x breadth x thickness).It weighs 218g.
The display is a 6.67″Super Amoled full screen display with FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400p and screen to body ratio of 92.7%(claimed)..The aspect ratio is 20:9 and the pixel density is ~395ppi.The display comes with an advertised brightness of 500 nits(typ.).
The display also backs TUV Rheinland Full Care Display Certification which means no excessive harmful blue light. It also features a 360° triple ambient light sensor for enhanced light detection and brightness adjustment. There is advanced colour scheme settings by which you can customise your display with colours of your choice.
The refresh rate is 60Hz and in this aspect the Poco F2 Pro lags behind some other flagships where 90Hz and even 120Hz refresh rate is available.
Under the hood is an Kyro 585 octa core processor(1×2.84,3×2.42,4×1.8 GHz) and the latest and most powerful Snapdragon 865(5G) chipset powered by the Adreno 650 GPU.
The Snapdragon 865 is the most powerful chipset available only after Apple’s A13 bionic chipset which is the best in the world but limited to only Apple devices. In the launch event Poco F2 Pro was compared with the highest end flagships namely the Samsung Galaxy S20 and the OnePlus 8 both of which run on the Snapdragon 865.
OS AND RAM
The F2 Pro runs on the MIUI for Poco based on Android 10.It also runs the Poco launcher. If you are a fan of the Poco launcher it is available in PlayStore and you can use it on other android devices.
There are 2 storage variants. The base variant has LPDDR4X 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage while the top variant has LPDDR5 8GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage. The internal storage is powered by UFS 3.1 for faster installation of apps and games.
Poco F2 Pro sports a quad camera module with main 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor and aperture of f/1.89,a 13MP ultra wide angle sensor with f/2.4 and 123° field of view,a 5MP telephoto macro sensor with f/2.2 and a 2MP depth sensor with f/2.4.
The camera comes with many settings and features like the Pro mode for both photos and videos which gives more control over focus and exposure. The primary sensor also comes with OIS(optical image stabilisation) and HDR shooting mode.
8K videos can be shot at 24/30fps,4K at 30/60fps,slow motion videos of 1080p at 120/240fps and super slow motion at 960fps.Other features like Pro mode,Video Bokeh and Night mode are also available.
The front camera is a motorised pop up 20MP sensor which comes with features like multi colour notification lights and drop protection.
Videos can be shot of 1080p at 30fps and slow motion videos of 720p at 120fps can also be captured.
The phone has an under display fingerprint sensor.
The Poco F2 Pro comes with unique Liquid Cooling Technology 2.0 which helps to dissipate heat efficiently and cools down the processor and display for better performance.
It is also TUV Rheinland High Gaming Performance certified. So along with the Liquid cooling technology it ensures immersive and extensive gaming without any lags or heating up of the phone.
The phone comes with z axis linear motor for realistic haptic feedback.
It supports 3.5mm jack and also comes with Hi Res Audio certification.
In terms of connectivity the F2 Pro supports Wifi 6 which can give connectivity speeds of 9.6GBps and is 3 times as fast as Wifi 5.It supports USB Type C cable.
Multifunctional NFC and IR blaster are some other features supported.
BATTERY AND COLOURS
The device is powered by a massive 4700mAH battery which supports 30W fast charging and can charge to 100%in 63 minutes.
There are 4 colour variants available:-the Cyber Grey, the Electric Purple, the Neon Blue and the Phantom White. The grey and purple colour has an anti glare matte finish.
Like many others I had huge expectations from the Poco F2 Pro.Not that it has disheartened me completely but honestly I just can’t believe it is a rebranded version of the Redmi K30 Pro launched in China earlier.Really if you cover the logo on the back you can’t distinguish between the 2 phones barring the colour of the phones.Well yes in terms of availability you will not get both Redmi K30 Pro and Poco F2 Pro together in most countries.
Another aspect in which I am not satisfied is the 60Hz refresh rate. With all the hype about the ultimate flagship killer and direct comparisons with OnePlus 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S 20 I had expected a minimum of 90Hz refresh rate.
Neverthless the Poco F2 Pro outshines the above mentioned phones in terms of price but that is also for european countries. In India the OnePlus 8 costs more but not by much.
The toughest competition in my view will be with the Realme X50 Pro.The prices are quite similar. Both run on the same Snapdragon 865.Realme X50 Pro has a 90Hz refresh rate and a dual front camera with primary 32MP to that of Poco F2 Pro’s single 20MP selfie camera. The rear camera setup is quite similar barring the F2 Pro’s 13MP ultra wide angle lens. The Poco F2 Pro has a bigger battery than the Realme X 50 Pro but the latter overcomes it with a huge 65W fast charging.
Though I do not tend to compare android devices with ios(Apple) as they are so different but if you are searching for a phone within that Rs. 40000 mark then iPhone SE is an option. It has the best hardware options out there with the top end chipset. But design wise it is old fashioned with the big bezels and small display.
The Poco F1 was so successful because it had almost no competitors in that price range and I feel that’s where the F2 Pro lacks.Still with all the high end specs and with such a powerful processor at the Rs 40000 range it is a very good option.
