From the time you remember mobile phones Motorola was there. With the constant evolution of smartphones Motorola is still present but for the last 3-4 years there has been no premium flagship device from the company.Motorola continued production of mid range smartphones but was not in competition with the big fishes in the market.
Now the Motorola Edge Plus has been announced and will hopefully be on sale in the US from the 14th of this month. It is the the new Motorola flagship and boasts of some top end specs but will it be enough to bring back Motorola in the race of the titans. It is to be seen.
To be frank the specs promise a lot on most counts but there are some not so impressive as well.It will cost around the $1000 in the US.It will be unveiled on Flipkart on 19th May in India with an expected price tag of ~Rs.76,000.Without much adieu lets dive into the details.
DESIGN AND BODY
As the name suggests the Motorola Edge Plus comes with,as the company says, the Endless Edge display. The display actually curves over the edges by 90 degrees. That gives the phone a beautiful look but also accounts for extra thickness. The curved edge also forces the power button to be very slim positioned just below the edge.
The dimensions are 161.1mm x 71.4mm x 9.6mm(length x width x thickness). It weighs 203g.It has a glass front and an aluminium frame. The glass is Corning gorilla Glass 5 and the phone is splash resistant. There is no IP rating for water and dust resistance.
The Edge Plus has a big 6.7″ OLED display supporting upto 90Hz refresh rate.It comes with a FHD resolution of 1080 x 2340p and ~385 ppi.The aspect ratio is 19.5:9 but if you consider the edges it becomes 21:9.The display supports HDR10+ and along with the curved edges and maximum 90Hz refresh rate looks excellent.
The curved edges have some notification palletes.Swiping up will cover the edges meaning no display on the edges abd swiping back turns it on.But such big curves will bring accidental touches though if you buy a phone named Edge plus I think you are prepared to cope with such touches.
While charging and on receiving notifications there will be edge lighting. If your phone is turned down you will be able to see the lighting when any notification comes adding to beauty of the device.
OS,PROCESSOR AND STORAGE
Motorola Edge Plus runs on Android 10 with no personal UI.That is you get pure Android experience.
In terms of processor the Edge Plus gives you the best.An octa core processor(1 x2.84GHz,3 x 2.42GHz,4 x 1.8GHz) with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865(5G) chipset and Adreno 650 G.P.U.So performance and speed wise there should be no complaints.
There are 12 gigs of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.0 internal storage.
The camera set up is a triple camera module with a time of flight(TOF) sensor and dual tone LED flash on the side.
The primary camera is a 108MP(wide) sensor with f/1.8 and is backed by Quad Pixel technology of Motorola. The big sensor produces such detailed images even at low light that you may not need the dedicated Night Mode.Optical Image Stabilisation(OIS) is obviously present.
The second is a 8MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 and supports 3x optical zoom.
Then comes the 16MP(ultra wide) sensor withf/2.2 and 117° field of view.
The camera supports 6K(3240p) videos along with 4K at 30fps.1080p videos and slow motion videos at 120fps can also be shot.
The front camera is a single punch hole module at the top left corner of the display and features a 25MP lens with f/2.0.It also features the same Quad Pixel technology.
It can shoot 1080p videos at 30/60fps.
Edge Plus has an under display optical fingerprint sensor.
In contrast to other high end flagships the phone supports a 3.5mm jack for wired headphones.
There are 2 stereo speakers and Motorola claims that the phone gives the most powerful audio output ever. This is because of the fact that the Audio tuning technology is from Waves, recipient of technical Grammy award.
Besides the Gaming mode with the compulsory no notifications mode the phone also features 2 additional touchscreen buttons on the top edge exclusively for games.
The device supports USB 3.1 Type C cable.
BATTERY AND COLOURS
Motorola Edge Plus sports a big battery of 5000mAH with 18W fast charging and 15W wireless fast charging. It also supports reverse wireless charging of 5W.The company claims 2 days battery life.Anyways the fast charging could have been of more power.
There are 2 colour variants:-Thunder Grey and Smokey Sangrila.
Well hands on performance is yet to be seen but an overall view suggests a pretty good phone though there are some glitches.
First and foremost the absence of IP rated water and dust resistance is quite unacceptable for a flagship device nowadays with such a price tag.In the camera section besides the 108MP main sensor more could have been done.Though it supports 6K videos the display resolution is FHD which is good but there are better.Lastly the big curved edges. They are bound to bring accidental touches.Yes,I agree that those who don’t love such edges should’nt buy it but I am talking from Motorola”s point of view.Another very important feature nowadays which is surprisingly missing is the dual sim.Yes the Motorola Edge Plus is a single sim enabled phone.
For US viewers the Edge Plus is exclusively for Verizon at this moment.
Let’s see the global pricing and maybe the glitches will not seem so prominent then. The Xiaomi MI 10 Pro also boasts of the 108MP camera at a far lesser price. However with the powerful chipset and big battery the Motorola Edge Plus will be phone to consider. What do you think?Let me know in comments.
