The iQoo full form” I quest on and on” is a sub brand of Vivo in China but is a separate entity in India. Now BBK Electronics has 5 brands in India-OnePlus,Oppo,Vivo,Realme and iQoo.
A new brand generally tries to launch in the budget section where the most rush is and then slowly grow.iQoo has done it the other way round. It has released a top end device at the start but the question is will it survive?
iQoo 3 is a potential flagship killer. It was released in March 2020 and even after 2 months people are still talking about it.Mostly gamers or specifically PUB G lovers.Don’t worry by no means the iQoo 3 is a only gaming phone. It is actually one of the first and few phones to feature the Snapdragon 865 SoC within the Rs.40000 mark.
Before diving into details I should bring to your notice that iQoo has 3 variants and only the top 12GB RAM variant has 5G support though in India if you are not a futuristic then it doesn’t matter.Without much adieu let’s look into the specs.
DESIGN AND BODY
Looks are premium rest assured. It has a glass front and back with a metal frame. The glass at the back is Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and the front is Schott Xensation UP glass. There is a quad camera module on the back.nothing unique there and a very small punch hole camera on the front.
The power button is on the right below the volume rockers. The power button is orange in colour and has a knurled texture so that you don’t have to search for it.There are 2 more capacitive touch buttons on the right frame whose details I will come to later. On the left is a smart AI button to summon Google Assistant.
The headphone port is on the top and the speaker grill and USB Type C port on the bottom frame.
The dimensions of the phone are 158.5mm x 74.9mm x 9.2mm.It weighs 214.5g.
iQoo 3 sports a 6.44″ E3 Super Amoled display with FHD+ resolution. The claimed screen to body ratio is 91.4% and it has an aspect ratio of 20:9.The average pixel density is ~409ppi and the phone has an advertised 800 nits of brightness with max.1200 nits.HDR 10+ is supported so along with the Amoled display you are assured of bright and true colours with perfect contrast.
The iQoo 3 has a 60Hz screen display refresh rate which is normal. This is an aspect where the phone lacks behind other flagships though it claims of a 180Hz touch refresh rate.
OS & PROCESSOR
It runs the iQoo UI 1.0 based on Android 10.The UI is new but allows many customisations. It will remind you of Vivo phones and it even has the Vivo smart assistant Jovi.Anyways you can change animations of fingerprint sensor or face unlock and there are many features but still there is room for optimisation.Hope it will come along with software updates.
In terms of processor iQoo 3 has the best available for Android phones at this moment the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC with Adreno 650 GPU.Speed and performance should not be an issue.
RAM & STORAGE
The base variants which are 4G enabled has 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and two variants of 128GB &256GB of UFS3.1 internal storage. The top variant which supports 5G has 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS3.1 internal storage.
Believe me LPDDR5 RAM and UFS3.1 flash storage is not available in most competitor phones.RAM management and file transfer or app installation should never be a problem on this phone.
There is no slot for Micro SD card.
iQoo 3 features a quad camera module with a primary 48MP Sony IMX582 wide sensor(f/1.79),a 13MP telephoto lens(f/2.46) with 2X optical and 20X digital zoom,a 13MP ultra wide sensor(f/2.2) which also acts as the macro lens and has 120 degrees field of view and a 2MP depth sensor(f/2.4).
The camera settings come with features like quick focus and AI editing which will again remind you of Vivo. The portrait mode offers good edge detection.Low light imagery is average until you turn on Night Mode.
Maximum 4K videos at 60fps can be captured. It comes with features like Super Steady Mode.
To be honest from reviews and images I have seen the camera is not upto the mark for a flagship level but on the brighter side that can be resolved with software updates.Still the 48MP primary sensor is not upto the other flagship phone cameras at least on mega pixel count.
The front camera is a very small punch hole on the top right corner of the display featuring a 16MP sensor with f/2.45.Videos of 1080p(max) can be shot at 60fps on the front camera.
iQoo 3 has an under display optical fingerprint sensor. It also supports face unlock and both these features are quite fast.
It supports 3.5mm jack and comes with Hi Res Audio certification. The phone is equipped with AK4377A Hi-Fi independent chip which powers the Audio DAC,a feature which is rare in smart phones. In simple words you get sound quality far superior to that of the phone with good headphones.
This is the USP of the phone.Gaming on this phone specially PUB G is on another level.
There is an Ultra Gaming mode with usual features like no notifications and all along with many settings like 4D Gaming Vibration to improve your gaming. Then comes the Monster Touch Buttons which are 2 pressure sensitive buttons on side frame for multi finger operation. While playing PUB G or Call Of Duty you will not have to touch the screen which to pro gamers is a gold mine as it gives the ultimate competitive edge.
The most important is the Monster Mode which you can enable from the settings menu or by long pressing the Monster Touch Buttons. This mode powers your CPU to the top. There will be no power saving.Yes your battery will drain quickly but imagine the Snapdragon 865 chipset at its full power. Its heaven for gamers.
As I said in Monster Mode there will be no power saving so automatically the battery will drain quickly. For long time game immersiveness you will have to plug in your charger and we all know how irritating the charger feels and it is bound to break your attention.iQoo 3 has even thought of that. The charger and even the headphone that is in the box has a capsule shaped finish.Your fingers can rest on them easily.
The one thing you can complain about is the 60Hz display refresh rate.Higher refresh rates will obviously be smoother but remember PUB G as of now does not support more than 60Hz but yes in future it may.The 180Hz super touch response rate of the iQoo 3 will be more than enough till then.
Snapdragon865 SoC,Monster Mode while gaming automatically demands a big battery and again iQoo 3 will surprise you.It has a big 4440mAH battery but an even eyebrow raising 55W fast charging support.
COLOURS AND PRICE
There are 3 colour variants-Tornado Black,Quantum Silver and Volcano Orange. The Volcano Orange is by far the best looking for its beautiful and uncommon colour texture but is also less available.
The 8GB RAM + 128GB storage costs Rs.34,990,the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage Rs.37,990 and the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage Rs.44,990.All prices are on Flipkart.
It will be very difficult for a new brand like iQoo 3 to compete with established brands like the Realme X50 Pro and the soon arriving Poco F2 Pro both at almost the same price range. All the three mentioned phones have Snapdragon865 but the gaming features gives the iQoo 3 an edge atleast for PUB G lovers which is quite a large number.
To be honest the camera is not of the highest quality and 60Hz screen refresh rate is quite unacceptable in a flagship device nowadays. But iQoo 3 has compensated with the processor and the highest RAM and storage capability. The 55W fast charging is also a highlighting feature not be unnoticed.
What are your thoughts? Are you willing to buy it?Please let me know in comments.
